ה-TCS230 מגיע במארז SOIC עם 8 פינים להתקנה על פני שטח (Surface Mount), ומשלב 64 פוטודודות על גבי שבב אחד. הפוטודודות מחולקות לארבע קבוצות:
- 16 פוטודודות עם מסנן אדום
- 16 פוטודודות עם מסנן ירוק
- 16 פוטודודות עם מסנן כחול
- 16 פוטודודות ללא מסנן – מסוגלות להעביר את כל המידע הספקטרלי של האורעל ידי בחירה סלקטיבית בקריאת הפוטודודות עם המסננים השונים, ניתן לזהות את עוצמת הצבעים השונים. החיישן כולל ממיר זרם-לתדר (Current-to-Frequency Converter) אשר ממיר את קריאות הפוטודודות לגל מרובע, שבו התדר פרופורציונלי לעוצמת האור של הצבע שנבחר.
תדר זה נקרא על ידי ה-Arduino – כפי שמוצג באיור שלהלן.
השבב מאפשר זיהוי מדויק של צבעים על ידי שילוב נתוני הפוטודודות עם הפילטרים השונים.
